Description: The Marine Dictionary containing terms related to navigation and nautical architecture. by AUBIN, Nicolas Amsterdam, Pierre Brunel ; 1702 4to: 7 by 10" [14]-776 pp. Some pages slightly browning at the margins. An important and superbly illustrated text on naval architecture, ship building, seamanship, maritime terminology, etc. This is the first edition of this extensive shipping lexicon by N. Aubin, which includes the corresponding Dutch terms in addition to the French explanations. Illustrated with a detailed allegorical engraved frontispiece by J. Lamsvelt depicting a shipyard and 24 engraved plates, of which one folding and six double-page showing various types of ships and navigation devices. Five folding sheets of flags, totaling 72, are among the most interesting plates. Many woodcuts within the text. Black and red title. Subsequently, there was half-black cloth, marbled paper on the covers, five raised bands on the spine (used binding), rubbed corners, and beginning to separate joints.
