His political treatise The Prince (Il Principe), written about 1513, is his most well-known work. He has frequently been referred to as the founder of contemporary political science and philosophy. He was a high figure in the Florentine Republic for many years, handling military and diplomatic matters. He composed poetry, plays, and music for carnivals. Historians and experts on Italian correspondence value his private correspondence as well. After the Medici lost their position of authority in 1498, he served as secretary to the Republic of Florence's Second Chancery until 1512.
