Latin text Ruhnken's Elogium Tiberii Hemsterhusii, written in elegant, glittering Latin, is still regarded as a seminal work in the history of classical research. David Ruhnken (1723–98) gives a pious but truthful portrayal of his recently deceased master, colleague, and close friend, the Hellenist Tiberius Hemsterhuis (1685–1766), who was also a close friend. The eulogy does more than only paint a clear picture of Hemsterhuis' life, manners, and intellectual nature; it also outlines the qualities that one would expect from a truly exceptional Classics critic.
