Description: Aurelius Augustine. With a woodcut printer's device, AURELII AUGUSTINI HIPPONENSIS EPISCOPI HOMILIAE DE TEMPORE, Lugduni (Lyon), Iacobi Iuntae, 1561. The manuscript title appears on the spine and front covers of this 4.5 by 7" (16.5x10.5cm) piece with blind-tooled pigskin over wood panels binding, intact brass clasps, and some binding wear. The front cover's center panel depicts Jesus' baptism in the Jordan, while the back cover features the Mercy Seat with God the Father and Christ in his arms, above the Holy Spirit. Origin: from Ferdinand Hoffmann von Grünbühel and Strechau's (1540–1607) library, bearing his autograph and the Memento Mori phrase "Zeittlichs Zergankhlich" along with the year 1581. Hoffmann was a native of Styria and served as president of Emperor Rudolf II's court chambers, where he was granted estates in Moravia. The book collection was thereafter continued to grow by Hoffmann's successors. The collection was acquired by Prince Ferdinand von Dietrichstein in 1664, and as a result, it was included in the renowned Dietrichstein-Nikolsburg Library, some of which were sold at auction in the early 1930s. written in Latin
