The British National Antarctic Expedition, also referred to as the Discovery Expedition of 1901–1904, was the first official British exploration of the Antarctic since James Clark Ross's journey sixty years prior (1839–1843). The new expedition, which was massively organized under a combined committee of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) and the Royal Society, conducted geographical exploration and scientific inquiry in what was then a mostly unexplored continent. Many people who would go on to become important players in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, including as the expedition's leader Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Edward Wilson, Frank Wild, Tom Crean, and William Lashly, had their Antarctic careers begun by it.
