Very rare first edition of the French theologian Claude de Sainctes (1525-1591) extensive explanation of the highly contentious major issue of Christ's presence in the Eucharist, dedicated to King Henri III and Pope Gregory XIII. Severely devout in his Catholic faith and a passionate advocate of the Catholic League, Sainctes was selected as the next bishop of Evreux due to his strong criticism of Calvin and Beza, as well as the support of Charles, the Cardinal of Lorraine (1575). After approving Henri III's assassination, he was later found guilty of high treason and given the death penalty. Title with a large woodcut mark. Latin text referenced. Smith S-84.
