The French lawyer and man of literature Etienne Pasquier lived from 1529 to 1615. After consuming poisonous mushrooms in 1558, he fell terribly ill and needed two years to recover. He was forced to write as a result, and he released the first volume of his Recherches de la France in 1560. At the age of thirty-seven, he rose to fame in 1565 after making a speech in which he successfully argued the University of Paris's case against the Jesuits. He continued to work on the Recherches diligently in the interim and occasionally produced other unrelated pieces.
