Description: Summa Casuum Conscientiae (Rosella casuum) by Salis, Baptista de Trovamala (d.1496) Venice: Paganinus de Paganinis, 21 December 1499. Octavo (6 by 4 1/4 inches). Gothic letter text printed in double columns, strong boards bound in a repurposed manuscript leaf, no ties, slight dampstaining throughout, title inked out. Very good condition, slight wear. Following the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, several confessional books emerged.
Their goal was to intellectually prepare priests to practice the office of confessor in a responsible and knowledgeable manner. Father Battista Trovamala finished this confessor's handbook in the convent of Levanto in 1483. Nicolaus Girardengus printed the Summa Casuum Conscientiae, also known as the Summa Baptistiniana, for the first time in 1484. The Rosella Casuum, also known as the Summa Rosella, was enlarged and amended by Trovamala in 1489 and printed by Giorgio Arrivabeni in Pavia, Venice, 1489, 1495, and 1499.
