"Parallel Lives," often known as "Plutarch's Lives," is one of the most significant and all-encompassing collections of biographies of well-known Greek and Roman people. Plutarch was more interested in capturing the essence of these well-known people's personalities and lifestyles than he was in giving a historical account of them. Among many other notable people, he concentrates on Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, Demosthenes, Romulus and Remus, and Alexander the Great. Theologian Johannes Tornarius, who served as the pastor of the Martinikirche in Dransfeld, close to Gottingen, from 1599 until his death in 1610, is the owner of this copy. Together with his ownership entry (dated 1597) on the title page and his discrete notation (written in pen) on the reverse of the last page of the book regarding the reading that was completed, "finit T. 7. Mar. anno 1599". The owner's initials "IT" and the binding year "1597" are printed on the front cover of Tornarius.
