French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist Rene Descartes (Latinized: Renatus Cartesius; 1596–1650?) created analytical geometry, which united the formerly disparate disciplines of algebra and geometry. He served in the Dutch States Army of Maurice of Nassau, the Prince of Orange, and the Stadtholder of the United Provinces for a significant amount of his working life. Descartes, one of the most prominent thinkers of the Dutch Golden Age, is also recognized by many as one of the pioneers of algebraic geometry and contemporary philosophy.
Analytical geometry was developed by French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist Rene Descartes (Latinized: Renatus Cartesius; 1596–1650?) and brought together the previously unrelated fields of algebra and geometry. For a large portion of his working life, he was a member of the United Provinces' Stadtholder, the Prince of Orange, and the Dutch States Army of Maurice of Nassau. One of the most well-known philosophers of the Dutch Golden Age, Descartes is often regarded as one of the forerunners of modern philosophy and algebraic geometry.
