Description: Photographs on albumen paper of five of Alfred Rethel's six watercolour sketches of the Hanibal's march, which he made between 1842 and 1844 (Sheet 1: Swiss Alpine shepherds contemplate the traces of the Carthaginian army's march visible in the thawing snow, Sheet 2: Sheet 2: Hannibal's African army on the march towards Italy looking at the snow-covered mountains as it crosses the Druentia, Sheet 4: Battle with the elements in the ice region, Sheet 5: View of a crevasse with injured Punic warriors, Sheet 6: Hannibal showing his army the realms of Italy from the heights of the mountains). Sheet 3: The dangers and hardships of the army during its march over the stormy Alpine passes, made more difficult by attacks from the Helvetians, are missing.
