Ex-library Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–20 August 1153) was a French abbot who played a significant role in the resuscitation of Benedictine monasticism through the fledgling Order of Cistercians. About 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southeast of Bar-sur-Aube, in an isolated clearing in a ravine known as the Val d'Absinthe, he was tasked with founding a new monastery. Tradition has it that Bernard established the monastery on June 25, 1115, and gave it the name Claire Vallée, which later became Clairvaux. Bernard preached an immediate faith there, using the Virgin Mary as the intercessor. Bernard was present at the Council of Troyes in 1128, where he drew the foundational elements of the Knights Templar's Rule, which quickly rose to prominence as the model of Christian nobility.
