Description: [Hieronymus Polus], Biblia ad vetustissima exemplaria nunc recens castigata Venice, 1587. size 6 by 7 3/4" Woodcut architectural title, fully illustrated with approximately 600 woodcut engravings representing biblical scenes, ranging from saints', prophets', and evangelists' portraits to dramatic scenes from the histories of the Old Testament and the life of Christ, and concluding with an imaginative Apocalypse cycle. Many of these are the creations of Bernard Salomon, a Lyonnaise artist, who was nicknamed "Le Petit Bernard" for his small, intricately detailed engravings; others are based on the biblical woodcuts of Hans Holbein. Title chipped at fore-edge and laid down, a few pages missing and supplied in old manuscript (visible on the photo), some foxing, and sporadic light spots, etc.
