The lower portion of the title page containing the edition information is missing from [Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1579]. Along with six images of distillery equipment, a woodcut portrait, a woodcut title vignette, and numerous text woodcuts of plants, herbs, mammals, fish, and other objects. In addition to chapters on medicinal plants, the book also includes brief sections on zoology and distillation. original, restored calf. updated ties and endpapers. Large folio measuring 10 by 15 1/4" with 832 pages, a lengthy introduction, and tables of contents. Title page with a portion of the bottom backed off, one text illustration removed, a few small marginal repairs, and sporadic spots. The Italian physician and naturalist P.A.G. Mattioli (1501-1577) translated "Di Pedacio Dioscoride Anazarbeo Libri cinque Della historia" (1544) into Latin, which was translated into French by Jean Des Moulins in its second edition (1st 1561).
