British School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Gentleman", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Fine portrait painting depicting a rosy cheeked man set at bust length within a landscape wearing black coat with gold buttons over a formal high-collared white shirt with neck scarf, his round face with rosy cheeks and nose under blue eyes, his brown hair with long stylish sideburns or mutton chops. Framed approximately 37.625" x 32.625". Unframed approximately 30.25" x 25".
Painting not relined. Craquelure to paint surface commensurate with age, along with rectangular band of craquelure corresponding to interior perimeter of stretcher. Under black light examination, a repaired vertical tear to center of canvas near right side of subject's face with in painting. Other minor and scattered in painting to background. Vibrant green varnish apparent to some areas of surface under UV black light. Verso of canvas with patch corresponding to aforementioned tear. No apparent tears, abrasions, or losses.
