American School, 19th century. "Portrait of a Man with Watch Fob", oil on canvas laid down on board, unsigned. Formal bust length portrait of a gentleman with grey to white hair and pink cheeks wearing a white collared shirt and black jacket with gold watch fob chain. Framed approximately 37.5" x 32.25". Unframed approximately 30" x 25.25".
Canvas laid down on wooden board with some areas with raised air pockets underneath. Scattered craquelure throughout, however, paint layer appears to be stable without signs of lifting. Under black light examination, greenish hue from older varnish coat. Painting with losses with in-painting on edges from rubbing on frame, numerous areas of background with retouches--mainly in lower left corner, to left of man's hair, and above right shoulder. Face with crack fills on forehead, retouches to chin, lips, cheek and right nostril. Lapel of jacket with in-painting in circular form, likely ornament removal, perhaps of a pin. No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
