Continental School, 19th century. "Knights", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Horizontally aligned figural oil painting depicting a group of knights in armor on horseback on a serpentine path in the rolling countryside, men with gold and blue flags, knight at front of group walking to assist seated woman. Framed approximately 31" x 40.75". Unframed approximately 25" x 35". Note: Proceeds of this sale benefit the non-profit Cathedral Thrift House in Atlanta, Georgia.
Painting has not been relined. Stretcher and canvas with light oxidation. Rubbing to edges of canvas from frame. Some small scattered areas of craquelure, however, paint layer appears to be stable without signs of lifting. Patch on back from earlier H shaped repair to tear lower left corner. A few small retouches scattered in background and over lower left tear. No other signs of damage, loss or repair. Painting may brighten and benefit from professional cleaning.
