French, probably second quarter 19th century. Empire style ormolu mounted mahogany Secretaire a Abattant having a rectangular marble top above a conforming case fitted with a single frieze drawer mounted with scrolling cornucopias and anthemion over a drop front decorated at the corners with palmette and rosette centered with a gilt bronze cartouche containing a star-burst mask and opening to an inset leather writing surface and a long drawer over arched open compartment above eight drawers and two hidden pull outs, above a pair of cupboard doors below, the whole flanked to each side by pilasters headed with anthemion and acanthus mounts centered with an eagle over palmettes, the sides and cupboard doors mounted with a figure depicting Victory holding aloft a chalice and standing on a berried laurel swag, the whole terminating on front carved paw feet. The back of case with sticker for Neiman Marcus, Dallas. Approximate height 54.5", width 37.25", depth 16".
Structurally sound. Chips with veneer loss throughout. Patches to top drawer. Blocks replaced interior small drawers. Small interior drawer with traces of glue residue at joints. Shrinkage to interior drawers. Some staining to the open compartment with two recent screws. Leather writing surface is cracking, peeling with some loss. Drop front and doors with shrinkage, wood loss, warping and some lifting. Old repaiir to top of left door in three places. One of the mounted anthemions is broken in half. Both halves present. One of the hidden pull outs appears to be stuck. Might be a secret release. There is some wood loss to the plinth. Back of case with shrinkage.
