Simon Willard (American, 1753 - 1848). An early 19th Century federal mahogany patent timepiece patent or "banjo" clock by Simon Willard. The clock features a gilt brass federal eagle finial, brass hinged domed bezel, mahogany throat embellished with a cased reverse painted eglomise tablet flanked with brass frames. The pendulum window has heavy floral reverse painting affixed with an extravagant presentation bracket finalized with an original gilded drum head. Approx: 10.25" W - measures door frame, 4" D, 41.75" H - measured from top of finial to bottom of drop finial. Provenance: In the 1970's this clock was given to Peter McClennon by his grandfather Judge Nelson Vanderhoof of Boston, Marnite Calder married Peter McClennon in 1982 and has been in her collection since.
