English, late 16th/ early 17th century. A late Renaissance Period carved walnut bible box, the front panel flat carved with nulling, a series of arched and concave niches, filled to top half with incised gadroons and lunettes and to bottom half with a convex arched form with further half-moon shaped decoration, above the nulling with further spade forms in relief below carved rosettes, the box's hinged lid and left side panel without further decoration, and the right side panel incised with initials "EE | E WD 3c". Box joined with iron nails, having two iron butterfly hinges to back of lid, and with iron escutcheon to front of box. Approximately 9.375" x 20.25" x 11.75". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from A. R. Broomer Antiques, New York, in a private sale on July 22, 2004.
