Oil on panel; 8" x 8" image, 17" x 17" framed. Of this work, the artist says, "This painting is indeed an ode to two of my most respected painters, Hans Memling and Jan Van Eyck. Think about how limited news must have been back in those days. Somehow Memling became aware of Van Eyck's altarpiece painting "Virgin and Child". Perhaps that inspired him to do his own version. The similarity in composition and style of the two paintings says something about how artists influence each other." Braldt was appreciative of the treatment of fabric by both Old Masters. In "Ode to Hans and Jan" he created a spiritually nonspecific shrine of his own, recreating parts of Van Eyck's painting with Memling's own "Virgin and Child". He incorporated stones sacred to himself in this personal altarpiece.
