A colorful Jacla necklace made by Cipriano Garcia of the Kewa Tribe in the 1990's. The necklace is comprised of Synthetic Turquoise, Coral, Spiny Oyster, and Jet. A Jacla necklace features loops of beads (originally earrings) attached to a traditional Pueblo or Navajo stone necklace. These distinctively styled "ear strings" evolved from functioning earrings, prized by all Southwest tribes for both men and women, becoming and iconic part of ceremonial dress. Early photos show men as well as women wearing this form of ear pendant but it is most often thought of as customary for the ears of young maidens. Upon marriage, these maidens would remove the Jaclas from their ears and tie them to their bead necklace as pendants. Kewa artists often use synthetic or stabilized stones for practical and aesthetic reasons rather than as a shortcut or compromise. Synthetic stones also reduce breakage, making jewelry more durable for everyday wear. The necklace measures approx. 30" long and the Jacla section is another 5.5" long.
