This fascinating series of watercolors by Otmar Elliger I was completed for an illustrated edition of the Bible, as indicated by the title which reads: Cabinet Der Uytmuntende Teekeningen Behelsende de Heylige Schrift Uytvoerig met Oostindischen Ink Gewassen Door Othomar de Elliger. The titlepage is in fact signed by Abraham Bloemaert, the famed Dutch artist of much earlier birth. Elliger’s scenes personify important tenets of Calvinist thought, theological beliefs of great importance to his patron, the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg.
