Thomas John Mitchell (American, 1875-1940). Taos Landscape, oil on canvas, ca. 1930s. Signed lower right. A striking landscape painting of Taos, New Mexico by Thomas Mitchell. Lured by the natural beauty of the Southwest as well as the Taos art community, Mitchell left his native Rochester NY for Taos in the 1930s. In this painting, a charming couple dressed in overcoats takes a stroll along a scenic path. To the right are adobe houses, and to the left are modest American houses. Bare autumnal trees grace the foreground, and majestic mountains rise in the distance. All is rendered in Mitchell's impressionist manner with loose brushwork, brilliant hues, as well as his keen eye for composition and sunlight effects. A dazzling painting in which Mitchell captures the breathtaking scenery and distinct architecture of Taos, a place that lured many remarkable early 20th century artists such as Ernest Blumenschein, Victor Higgins, Walter Ufer, and Joseph Henry Sharp. Size (painting): 36" L x 40" W (91.4 cm x 101.6 cm) Size (frame): 40.875" L x 45" W (103.8 cm x 114.3 cm)
About the Artist: Born in Rochester, New York in 1875, Thomas John Mitchell studied art at the Mechanics Institute, and was a member of the Rochester Art Club and the Geneseeans, a group of representational landscape painters that focused on regional scenery. Mitchell kept his studio in the old Reynolds Arcade, and was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Buffalo Society of Artists. In the 1930s, Mitchell visited Taos, New Mexico. Sadly, the Great Depression took its toll on Mitchell as it did with many artists. A retrospective exhibition of Mitchell's paintings and sculptures covering the years 1880-1950 was held at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery on September 21, 1980.
