Northern Europe, England, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome top hat formed with a thin interior wooden framework and wrapped with soft silk covering and felt base. The lower part of the tall cylindrical crown is wrapped with a black ribbon and the brim curves slightly inward. The interior is lined with a leather band white silk. The maker mark "Vickery & Co." is stamped on the interior of the crown. This hat belonged to Charles Cowling, and his signature is hand written on the interior band. Cowling was allegedly instrumental in saving the life of a member of the famous Bonham Carter family during the Zeebrugge Raid in WWI. An iconic piece of Victorian men's fashion that probably belonged to a British war hero. Top hats remained popular for formal events well into the 20th century, and it's easy to see why, with the sophisticated construction and choice materials of this example! Size of hat: 11.25" W x 6.25" H (28.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
