East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A gorgeous nephrite jade carving of a mythical bird known as a fenghuang or phoenix displaying spread wings and a flared tail in the shape of a ruyi scepter. Each plume delicately incised, the fantastical avian raises its regal head, a long, arrow-form crest extending from the top to meet the animal's back. The underside is additionally sculpted with the bird's tucked legs, as a drill hole vertically pierces its midsection allowing for suspension or attachment.
