Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, ca. 19th century CE. A serving bowl-sized decorative vessel in the form of an eight-pointed star, made from a thick, coarse red clay and painted with a thin black/grey slip, heightening its dramatic appearance. A round mouth is at the center of the star, surrounded by a broad, raised rim with a thick lip at its center; a decorative band surrounds this, with an interesting incised motif that gives the impression of eyes watching from behind foliage. This complex vessel, made from different mold-made parts with added decoration, demonstrates the skill of the artisan who made the piece. Size: 9.45" W x 9.15" H (24 cm x 23.2 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.
