East Asia, Japan, Ando Jubei (Japanese, 1876-1953), 20th century. A beautiful brass jar embellished with a technique called tomeiyu shippo (transparent enamels). The exterior of the gorgeous vessel is coated with an emerald green enamel cloisonne exterior and painted with a gorgeous floral motif in shades of white, yellow, pink, purple, black, grey, and green. Sitting upon a flat, circular base, the elegant vase presents thin walls that spread gently outwards to a sloped shoulder, a brief neck, and a flared rim. Petite recessed dots organized in rows decorate the brass, creating a wonderful textured motif from beneath the glass, and an incised design of two petalled flowers with leaves decorates the brass on the side opposite the painted flowers. A lustrous ring of brass decorates the rim and base. A maker's mark can be found on the base indicating this was made by the famous Ando Jubei workshop. Size: 3.375" in diameter x 6.25" H (8.6 cm x 15.9 cm)
