Central Asia, Persia, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A richly detailed Persian Qajar lacquered wood panel, set within its original frame, depicting a courtly and devotional scene. At the center, a lush green landscape unfolds, populated by stylized trees and floral mounds. A turbaned figure, dressed in a long patterned robe, leads a finely harnessed horse adorned with a decorative saddle. Above them, a robed ascetic sits cross-legged, hands clasped in prayer, evoking themes of spiritual authority and contemplation. The composition is enclosed by a sumptuous gilt floral border, densely worked with scrolling vines, rosettes, and perched birds rendered in delicate polychromy. The lacquer retains its warm, aged glow, its surface gently mellowed over time, attesting to the panel's age and long life as an object of display. Size of painting: 8.4" W x 8" H (21.3 cm x 20.3 cm); of frame: 11.5" W x 11.25" H (29.2 cm x 28.6 cm)
Lacquer painting flourished under the Qajar dynasty as a courtly art form, prized for its combination of narrative, ornament, and technical refinement. Panels like this were created for decorative and ceremonial purposes, often drawing on themes of poetry, romance, and piety. This example's interplay of gilded floral abundance with a central scene of worldly and spiritual figures reflects the Qajar fascination with balancing opulence and moral ideals.
