Anonymous (French, German, or Dutch, XIX century). Feasting Children. Silvered copper alloy relief, n.d. A splendid silvered copper alloy relief teeming with the playful chaos of children enacting a grown-up feast within a lush forest setting. The central drama unfolds as a young boy in a chef's hat gently holds the face of a girl, his gaze intent, while another boy swiftly snatches shrimp and lobster from her laden tray, one already lost to the tall grass below. To their left, a seated child eagerly awaits a morsel, while above, another joyfully devours fruit held in his apron. Across the scene, a boy in a feathered cap, holding a hare, engages a seated girl clutching a pheasant, perhaps a subtle commentary on the various strategies employed in the pursuit of life's bounty. This lively scene, set against a backdrop of verdant foliage and beneath a symbolic bearskin draped in the trees, captures the innocent yet intricate dynamics of desire and acquisition. Size of relief: 14.25" W x 5.75" H (36.2 cm x 14.6 cm); of frame: 19.5" W x 11" H (49.5 cm x 27.9 cm)
