Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An antique wooden horse saddle showing extensive age and signs of use, with old repairs where pieces have worn or broken over time. The upright cantle is adorned with bone and horn inlays, while the broader panels feature painted figures and flowing ribbon motifs. Rope cords and iron ring fittings line the seat's edges, once used to secure stirrups or girth straps. These wooden saddles, with their high pommels and cantles, were designed for stability in rugged terrain and often embellished to reflect the status of the Tibetan nomads and warriors who rode with them. Historically central to Tibetan equestrian life and trade caravans, they underscore the cultural importance of horses and horse ownership. The saddle would have been used with a fleece or blanket padding to protect the horse's back. Size: 21" L x 14" W x 12" H (53.3 cm x 35.6 cm x 30.5 cm).

Condition
Heavy wear and weathering from age and use. The seat is encrusted with a resin from repairing the seat. The iron ring fittings exhibit rusting and oxidation. Cracks and losses in the bone and horn inlays on the cantle, and painted motifs have faded or discolored. Old repairs with iron splints indicate the saddle's long history of functional use and extensive weathering.
