Northern Africa, region of Libya, Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Tuareg (also Twareg, Touareg, Berbers, or Tamashek language speakers), ca. early 20th century CE. A gorgeous dagger made from brass and steel with a leather and brass sheath. The blade has an elongated profile that tapers to a pointed tip. Incised on the blade are geometric motifs and a ricasso with additional patterns. The sheath fits over the blade with twin loops for attaching to a belt. The hilt is exceptionally beautiful with a cross guard that terminates in spherical shapes and at the center is a raised triangular section with more incised geometric motifs. Several black and copper washers have been set into the grip near the center of the hilt. While functional, ornate knives such as this example were also part of ceremonial or formal dress and were proudly worn as decorative pieces. Size (dagger): 18.125" L x 5" W (46 cm x 12.7 cm); (sheath): 10.75" L x 1.5" W (27.3 cm x 3.8 cm)
