- Lot Description
W. Gouvea (probably Brazil, active XIX century). Two village scenes. Acrylic paint on canvas, 1986 and 1987. Both signed and dated at lower left and on verso. These vibrant scenes by Brazilian folk artist W. Gouvea distill the warmth, rhythm, and intimacy of rural life into jewel-like compositions. Painted in 1986 and 1987, each work brims with the artist's hallmark precision and storytelling flair, balancing stylized figuration with a lush, patterned landscape. n the 1986 composition, four women in layered white dresses and two men in white shirts gather in a verdant grove beneath a star-speckled twilight sky. The men sit at the center, beating tall hand drums, while the women carry sprigs of flowers in ritual procession. The surrounding vegetation blooms in shades of crimson, violet, and emerald, and white birds sweep across the deep blue heavens, linking the grounded music and ceremony to the wider spiritual sphere. Size of painting (both the same): 12.5" W x 15.75" H (31.8 cm x 40 cm); of frame (both the same): 23.25" W x 26.5" H (59.1 cm x 67.3 cm)
The scene radiates communal harmony, evoking the celebratory traditions of Afro-Brazilian culture.
The 1987 painting shifts to the bustle of a village, where girls carry baskets on their heads through sandy paths lined with vivid purple and red plants. Ochre-hued houses with red-tiled roofs stand amid swaying palm trees, and children play in the open spaces. Above, a dotted sky filled with birds in flight creates a dreamlike continuity with the earlier work, while the earthy palette grounds the composition in the rhythms of everyday life.
In both paintings, Gouvea's meticulous pointillist touches create texture and atmosphere, while his bold, flat planes of color pay homage to the naive and self-taught painting traditions of Brazil. The works are timeless celebrations of community - musical, playful, and deeply connected to the land.
