Latin America, Mexico, Ocumichu, ca. mid-20th century CE. An impressive pottery statue of a demon standing atop an integral ovoid plinth. The demonic figure has a pair of abstract creatures atop the front of the legs and flames licking up the sides, abstract serpentine creatures which double as 'arms' with conical heads for 'hands,' and an angry serpent head protruding from the center of the chest. The goat-horned head boasts bulging cylindrical eyes with recessed pupils, an upturned nose, a pair of human faces screaming out between the sharpened fangs, and an incised goatee. Thick layers of pigment in hues of cobalt, crimson, coffee, cream, citrine, and black cover the entire composition and imbue it with a characteristic presentation of fine Ocumichu artistry. Size: 7.7" W x 23" H (19.6 cm x 58.4 cm).
Provenance: ex-private Lucky collection, California, USA; ex-James Byrnes collection, first curator of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Condition
Professionally repaired and restored from multiple pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Small nicks and abrasions to plinth, legs, body, and head, with softening to some finer details, and light fading to areas of original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and great pigmentation remains throughout.
