A striking Mexican Modernist oil on board painting, signed C. Rodriguez, a student of Diego Rivera's, at the lower right and following Rivera's teachings to honor Mexico's indigenous heritage with a style that features large, simplified figures with bold features and a vibrant palette. The composition presents a campesino couple - the man sitting with raised knees and playing a pan flute, an instrument traditionally popular throughout Latin America - the woman kneeling by his side with hands placed upon her knees. Both are dressed in a humble fashion - the man with bare legs, a blue garment, and a white wide-brimmed hat - the woman wrapped in a pink rebozo from head to torso with a blue skirt. Neither figure addresses the viewer directly. The man's eyes are hidden beneath his hat and probably focused on his instrument; the woman gazes downward. Nicely framed, a wonderful painting created by an artist who subscribed to the Mexican Modernists' concept of indigenismo. Size: 24.25" L x 19.75" W (61.6 cm x 50.2 cm); 29.25" L x 24.75" W (74.3 cm x 62.9 cm) framed.
Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection; from a collection in Tucson, Arizona, purchased in Mexico City in 1934
