20th C. Northwest Argillite Platter - Ivan Otterlifter

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, made by Ivan Otterlifter (Cherokee, lived from 1936-1999), ca. 1970s CE. An absolutely gorgeous matte black argillite platter with the relief body of an owl forming much of the body. Incredible pearlescent abalone shell inlays form the eyes and details on the wings and tail feathers. The platter is long and ovoid, gently upturned at its edges and resting on a smooth, flat base with the artists' distinctive signature mark incised into one end. The owl's body is raised, with a beautifully regular feathered texture. The tail feathers, wings, and head are lower profile, aside from the long beak, which rises to meet the chest. Size: 8.8" W x 16.1" H (22.4 cm x 40.9 cm)

Ivan Otterlifter was a member of the Cherokee nation who made artwork in the Pacific Northwest tradition; his work had a high profile, for example being featured by Bonham's (https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/13668/lot/6103/).
