Near East, Turkey or Syria, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful hand-crafted wooden box decorated with fine nacre (mother of pearl) inlays! The body is comprised of 5 panels riveted together, the frontside swelling outward at the center. The lid is attached by two iron hinges and opens and shuts easily to store keepsakes. The nacre pieces are cut into petite triangles, diamonds, and discs then inlaid in geometric and linear patterns on all sides, except for the back and base. The wood has a dark, weathered patina and is fully functional. Size: 11.25" L x 7.5" W x 6.5" H (28.6 cm x 19 cm x 16.5 cm)
