- Lot Description
Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A skillfully hand-carved bovine or ungulate bone crucifix with an integral loop on the top for suspension as a pendant. The lovely cross features a carefully carved Christ figure posed with both arms outstretched parallel to the arms of the cross in a crucifix pose and wearing a halo and long-sleeved latticework robe decorated with an "x" on his chest. Outlined in a decorative embossed border with incised diagonal striations, the piece is additionally adorned with small petaloid embellishments in the 4 inner corners of the cross and two raised dots below each hand of Christ. A sign of Christ's triumph over death and eternal life, this pendant would have held apotropaic and protective powers to its owner. A gorgeous and meaningful wearable relic from the Byzantine world! Size: 2.375" L x 0.25" W x 2.75" H (6 cm x 0.6 cm x 7 cm)
