Roman, late Imperial to early Byzantine period, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A gorgeous lunate pendant with a crescent-shaped body formed from delicate 97% gold (equivalent to 22K+) panels and bearing ten circular bezels within the recessed body. The bezels contain 9 petite garnets of warm vermilion hues and one similarly colored glass cabochon just beneath the arching suspension loop. The shape of the crescent moon was associated with Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon usually depicted in Roman art paired with the Sun and driving a four-horse quadriga. Lunar motifs are also linked with the Roman goddesses Diana and Juno. Size (pendant): 0.65" W x 0.75" H (1.7 cm x 1.9 cm); (largest garnet): 0.1" W (0.3 cm); (necklace strand): 22.25" L (56.5 cm); quality of gold: 97% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 1.5 grams.

Condition
Gold pendant, garnets, and glass are ancient. Slight bending to overall form of pendant body, suspension loop, and interior bezels, with minor nicks to some garnets and glass inlays, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Glass inlay is just beneath suspension loop on left side.
