Southeast Asia, Vietnam, ca. 3rd century CE. A graceful relic of ancient Southeast Asian craftsmanship, this translucent green glass ornament takes the form of a crescent moon, its surface softly weathered by nearly two millennia. Likely originally worn as an earring, the piece is now strung as a pendant, allowing it to be admired as both personal adornment and a historical artifact. The crescent form was valued throughout early Vietnamese cultures, often associated with fertility, protection, and celestial cycles. The pendant is accompanied by a strand composed of twenty ancient glass beads, their pale bluish-green tones harmonizing with the pendant, and set within a modern arrangement of polished brass beads that provide a warm, complementary contrast. Size of pendant: 2" L x 0.4" W x 1.8" H (5.1 cm x 1 cm x 4.6 cm); of strand: 23.25" L (59.1 cm)
While the strand itself is contemporary, both the crescent and the ancient beads originate from the same cultural horizon of the 3rd century CE, a period when maritime trade networks carried glass technology and artistic influences across Southeast Asia. Such ornaments illustrate the high level of skill in ancient glassworking and the enduring appeal of symbolic forms. The transformation from earring to pendant preserves its elegance while offering a new way to appreciate Vietnam's deep artistic heritage.
