Pre-Columbian, Argentina, Catamarca region, Belen culture, ca. 1200 to 1476 CE. A hand-built earthenware bowl with a concave circular base, gradually expanding walls, a pair of petite lug handles on the exterior shoulder, and a thick rim surrounding the deep basin. The bowl exhibits an iron-oxide-hued ground, four pairs of black-painted vertical bars along the unglazed exterior, and two registers of stepped motifs with spiraling 'tails' that intertwine with that of its neighbor. Condition
Professional repair to area of rim and walls, with resurfacing and light overpainting along break lines. Nicks and abrasions to base, walls, and rim, with light fading to original pigmentation, and minor encrustations. Nice traces of original pigment throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
