The painted metal pendulum represents the Statue of Liberty brandishing a wide smile while holding her torch and wearing a dress decorated with apples and a belt buckle that reads "#1" over a red apple inscribed "The Big Apple", and on of the hands is adorned with a miniature taxicab.
About the Artist: Binford Taylor Carter, Jr better known as Benny Carter was born in High Point, North Carolina in 1943 but his paintings reference his countless visits to New York City as well as biblical stories. A contemporary artist beloved for his folk art and outsider art, Benny Carter is a descendant of Thomas Carter who was a Puritan minister of the Massachusetts Bay Colony as well as a others who moved south and owned the Carter Plantation in North Carolina. Carter is a self-trained artist who in addition to paintings creates birdhouses, sculptures, and clocks. Carter's art has been exhibited at the American Visionary Art Museum, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Palmer Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. His work has also been discussed in publications including "Self-Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art" (2000) by Betty-Carol Sellen and Cynthia J. Johanson, "American Folk Art: A Regional Reference" (2012) by Kristin G. Congdon and Kara Kelley Hallmark, and "Light of the Spirit: Portraits of Southern Outsider Artists" (1998) by Karekin Goekjian and Robert Peacock.
