Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Canosa, early Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century BCE. A charming mold-formed pottery depiction of Eros, the god of love and desire. He presents nude atop an integral platform with outspread legs in front of a flowing cloak and delineated musculature across the chest, his head slightly right-facing and embellished with a necklace. He holds one arm to his side with a fragment of his wing peeking above the shoulder, and supports a handled amphora against his head with his other arm. Ovoid eyes, a petite nose, and thin lips comprise the elegant visage beneath a centrally-parted coiffure. Thick white pigment covers the entire composition and suggests the figure was at one time covered in vivid polychrome pigment. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 2.8" W x 5.625" H (7.1 cm x 14.3 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Mazard family collection, France, acquired in the 1980s
