Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-carved wooden figure depicting a Lord-King, perhaps once used as the handle or finial or a royal staff or scepter. The figure is shown in a kneeling pose atop an integral rectangular plinth, holding both bent arms atop his skirt-adorned lap, and has hemispheric protrusions centered on the chest and in-between the shoulder blades. The abstract countenance features broad, almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, a tapered mandible with a petite mouth, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a simple cap. Fine patina envelops the entire carving and makes for an attractive presentation. Size: 1.4" W x 4.1" H (3.6 cm x 10.4 cm); 4.7" H (11.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
