East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A cast bronze statue of Guandi, seated on an animal skin draped over a pedestal, wearing armor adorned with the characteristic mountain pattern. This type of Chinese lamellar armor, used from the Tang through the Ming Dynasty, features overlapping V-shaped or chevron-like plates resembling mountain peaks. Across the surface of the armor are circular settings for precious or semi-precious stones, which have been replaced with faceted glass in modern times, though a single ruby remains set into the right arm. The fragmentary pedestal base is mounted on a custom acrylic stand. Guandi is the deified form of Guan Yu, a renowned general from the late Eastern Han Dynasty (d. 220 CE), celebrated for his loyalty and martial prowess. He is venerated in Chinese folk religion, Daoism, and Buddhism as the God of War and Protector of the Righteous. Size: 4" L x 2" W x 6" H (10.2 cm x 5.1 cm x 15.2 cm); 7.75" H (19.7 cm) on included custom stand.
