East Asia, China, ca. mid-20th century CE. A large and visually striking Chinese bookend crafted from a pewter alloy and copper. Formed as a broad flat disc with the lower edge folded back to create a stable base, the piece is overlaid with a copper layer, and a second pewter layer featuring intricate openwork designs. The cut-out motifs depict stylized, prowling creatures reminiscent of mythical pixiu - auspicious Chinese beasts associated with protection and good fortune. The contrasting metals and finely rendered silhouettes give this functional stand a decorative presence, making it equally suited for display or practical use. Size: 14" L x 5" W x 9" H (35.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 22.9 cm)
