East Asia, China, Late Zhou to Early Han Dynasty, ca. 250 to 200 BCE. How cute! An adorable handmade pottery seated dog with a slender body, pointed raised ears, short snout, and a tail that stands up vertically, as though wagging. Skillfully painted in a sandy yellow hue, black pigment accentuate his large nose, whimpering mouth, and raised brows, while a white hue highlights his circular eyes and flat snout. Additional black striations outline his hind legs, eyes, whiskers, and fur, giving depth to his warm coat. Wearing an orange and cream colored collar embellished with spiked adornments, the charming pooch poses as though begging; one can almost hear his whimper. A lovely example of the everlasting importance of human-canine relations! Size: 6.25" L x 4" W x 9.125" H (15.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 23.2 cm)

Condition
Repaired from several pieces. Expected surface wear with nicks/chips, some minor apertures, and fading of paint as commensurate with age. Stable fissures seen from underside. Otherwise, very nice with rich earthen deposits.
