**Originally Listed At $600**
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bakongo peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely-carved wooden figure of a male drummer crouching atop an integral ovoid plinth with a large idiophone held between his legs. He leans forward and holds both hands atop the drum head as if he's creating a rhythmic beat. A thick neck supports the large head which boasts a stylized visage of almond-shaped eyes, a wide, aquiline nose, full lips, and a slender beard, all beneath heavy brows and a conical helmet. Several areas along the body and head present vibrant vermilion pigment, and lustrous brown patina covers the unpainted areas. A fabulous figural example from Central Africa! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.25" W x 16.5" H (8.3 cm x 41.9 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.
