East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A snuff jar carved from elephant ivory with red resin accents at the rim and base, formed in the shape of a rectangular prism. Each face is intricately adorned with layered relief and delicate openwork, creating an impressive sense of depth and dimensionality. The panels depict serene garden scenes populated by figures, showcasing the refined craftsmanship and narrative detail characteristic of Qing artistry. A tubular opening at the top was designed to accommodate a stopper, now missing.
