European, probably Germany, ca. 16th century. Woodblock - Theme: Arion Sings a Song to the Dolphins. A woodblock print depicting Arion, the ancient Greek Dionysiac poet known not only for his musicality and invention of dithyramb (a choral composition sung and danced to in order to honor Dionysos, the god of wine, merriment, and fertility) but also for a myth that featured dolphins who rescued Arion from pirates who had kidnapped him. Here we see Arion standing aboard a vessel, playing a lyre and singing a song to the dolphins in the sea below as musicians accompany his song before a cathedral.
